A Letter From 2019-2020 Your Drum Majors

Being Drum Major is something that is unexplainable. I can’t sit here and accurately tell you what’s its like to be Drum Major, because its so much more than that. It’s the journey, the memories, the friendships, and so much more. Starting as a freshman was scary, never thinking that I wanted Drum Major like I did. And now thinking about helping the new Freshman get acclimated, and helping them grow is one of the greatest perks of the position. Standing in front of the band on Friday nights with a giant smile, knowing that a new face will soon take my place is heartbreaking. Yes, I know i’ll miss it. Then again, I also can’t wait to see what that next person will do. AGHS band has been my life for the past four years and I’m sad to say goodbye, but I have to say one thing. You guys standing on the field on Friday nights, don’t take advantage. Those are going to be the best nights of your high school career. Standing in front of you for the past two years has been an honor! I wore that uniform not because I was the best musician or because I knew what I was doing, but because of you. Knowing that I stood in front of the band watching you work your tails off and taking pride in what you do is why I loved being Drum Major. Knowing that the family we formed will never be replaced and never be forgotten is something so special. Working along side your best friend making each other the best you can be is something I hope all of you get a chance to do because its been amazing. Again, don’t take advantage because this is something that you will miss.

2018-2020 Drum Major, Nathaniel Gibson
It becomes increasingly difficult to sum up my four years in this band the more that I think about them. High school band, especially, is one of those things that progress in leaps and bounds without you even realizing it. You come in as a freshman and you are so terrible and you don't even know it and everything is so much more complicated all of the sudden and the music is so different and there's this insane expectation and rigorous schedule. It's overwhelming. Then you make it to week two of band camp and suddenly you can march in step way better and you can play your instrument while marching backwards on your tiptoes. You survive it. You want to quit because everything is so hard and you feel scared, but you decide to keep going just a little but longer when all of a sudden, your first football game is there to smack you in the face. You almost wet your pants on the way to the sidelines and your legs are shaky because you're about to perform in front of a couple hundred people. And in what feels like seconds, the show is over and in just a few minutes the entire season is over. And in these few minutes you stayed in step every time and you played every note and hey, most of them were even in tune. That's how it was for me anyways. And in a couple of years I was auditioning for Section Leader and Drum Major, I was practicing my little heart out and finding more things to love and learn about music every day. I learned that failure IS okay and that failures are only failures if you don't learn from them.
In my stay here at Albert Gallatin, Ive fallen I love with the endless possibility of progress the band program affords to its students. I've gotten to conduct up on that stand under the Friday-night lights. I've seen the determination and the motivation sweep across the field  and pull us all into one musical being. I've seen some of the finest students at Albert Gallatin pour their souls and all of its troubles into the outlet of music. It's a beautiful thing to have been able to witness and I ask any of you who may be reading this to continue to support the arts because they have not only shaped the best parts of myself, but my peers and the world in and of itself.

2019/2020  Drum Major, Taylor Tubbs
